Recently, we’ve received a few drives from customers who have followed some bad advice, courtesy of the Internet.
For example, one of the cases had the hard drive platters “cleaned” after the disk exhibited problems. The article is located here:
This is very bad advice. If you dig into the article, the author is instructing on how to remove dust from the circuit board of the hard drive. First, exterior dust makes very little difference to the performance of the hard disk.
Second, the title is very misleading. The hard drive platters should never be cleaned. In fact, the drive should not be opened since there are no user-serviceable parts inside (unless you are a data recovery professional). Minor remnants of material will lead to platter damage, and an unrecoverable drive. This link provides excellent information regarding the reality of platter damage in data recovery.
